Scientific Rationale

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, offers advanced fellowship hands-on programs on:

  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
  • Advanced endoscopy
  • Pancreatic diseases
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

 

Fellows have to be certified Gastroenterologists or Surgeons who want to increase their skills on advanced EUS, ERCP (including cholangioscopy and pancreatoscopy), advanced endoscopy, management of pancreatic diseases or management of inflammatory bowel disease. Duration of fellowship ranges from one to twelve months according to the fellow’s availability.

Gastroenterologists and Surgeons in training can also apply for fellowship in our Department.

The programs are led by the staff of the Endoscopy Unit, Pancreas Unit and IBD Unit of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, Spain:

  • Francisco L. Martín, MD (Coordinator of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship)
  • Manuel Barreiro-de Acosta, MD, PhD (Head of the IBD Unit)

 

Those fellows staying for at least 6 months will also have the opportunity to develop a research project or to participate in some of the projects of the group. This will allow them to be a co-author in abstracts, as well as in original and review papers.

 

To be eligible for any of the fellowships, applicants have to submit to the Department of Gastroenterology the corresponding application form available at this web. After receiving the application, we will keep in touch with the applicant to guide him/her through the acceptance process.

EUS, ERCP and Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

More than 2,000 EUS procedures and more than 700 ERCP (including cholangioscopy and pancreatoscopy) are performed yearly by the group. The EUS fellow will perform not less than 10 to 20 EUS procedures per week during his/her stage at the Unit.

 

The specific content of the educational program varies according to the length of stay and will be sent to the fellow after registration.

Fellowship in Pancreatic Diseases

The multidisciplinary Pancreas Unit of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela includes specific sub-units for acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and cystic pancreatic tumors. In addition, we have a screening program for subjects at high risk of pancreatic cancer.

 

More than 300 patients with acute pancreatitis, more than 500 patients with chronic pancreatitis, and more than 200 patients with pancreatic tumors are managed at our Department every year.

 

Fellows will have the opportunity to deal with all these patients and their diseases, including diagnostic techniques, treatment and follow-up protocols.

Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela has daily activity at the IBD outpatient clinic, day hospital for biological IBD therapy, and clinical trials unit. Additionally, IBD specialists has weekly activity at the IBD endoscopy unit, paediatric-to-adult transition outpatient clinic, and multidisciplinary IMID clinic together with rheumatologists.

 

More than 1600 patients with Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis are managed at our Department every year, more than 300 of them receiving biological therapy. In addition, more than 400 IBD colonoscopies are performed yearly.

 

Fellows will have the opportunity to deal with all these patients and their diseases, including endoscopic and diagnostic techniques, treatment and follow-up protocols.
